SOS WIN: automatic recovery system

It's well-known that school computers are used daily by many students who are beginners and often inexperienced. As we can imagine, such a situation makes it extremely complicated to safeguard PCs. Usually, these computers are seriously damaged as a consequence of deleting programs, installation of unnecessary software and, if the worst comes to the worst, the whole operating system turns out to be compromised.

In order to solve the above mentioned problems, we realized SOSWIN. It's a basic computer system that we install on a PC. In case of crashes, SOSWIN automatically restores the whole operating system, all the programs and peripheral drivers (printers, modem, scanner, etc.) which have been previously installed and set up. Therefore, You avoid to manually repeat these complex operations that often cause a remarkable waste of time.

SOSWIN has been realized by using Gnu/Linux Debian/Etch operating system that are open source, free and without more costs for additional licenses.

If SOSWIN is properly configured, it allows to control an host operating system (in our case Windows XP with drivers and application programs) and plan its complete recovery at regular intervals of time automatically in a fast and safe way.

SOSWIN is a flexible system since it allows to do manual backup in order to save and restore possible subsequent changes, such as operating system upgrade and addition of new programs which will be saved and restored too.

Minimum requirements:

  • Windows 2000/XP to be installed on NTFS file-system
  • Gnu / Linux Debian 4.0 Etch to be installed on a partition which has to be different from that of Windows; a basic installation (without graphic interface) is recommended, as well as the installation of ntfsprogs is fundamental.
  • Boot-loader GRUB, to allow startup of various operating systems.

SOSWIN represents an excellent solution not only for all scholastic institutes, but also for everybody who need to restore operating system together with programs and peripheral drivers in an easy, fast and safe way.

SOSWIN has been successfully tested and installed for Manfredi-Tanari institute in Bologna.
